There are 10 different strategies you can use.
1. Use Logical Reasoning
2. Act out or use objects
3. Use or make a table
4.  Draw a picture
5. Guess and Check
6. Use, or look for, a pattern
7. Work Backwards
8. Make a list
9. Make it Simpler
10. Brainstorm

With these 10 tools you'll be able to tackle even the toughest jobs.  Good luck!
 

Don't forget the clue words:

is, was, are, were  -         =means equals
amounts to, totals  -     = means equals
of    -                              X means multiplication
times  -                           X means multiplication
less than, decreased
by, reduced by, fewer
than                  -               - means subtraction
by            -                         + Means  addition
together with, combined
with, more than     -         + Means addition
