Introduction

Prehistoric Native Americans lived before history was recorded in writing.  The tribes would depend upon storytellers to pass their heritage down to the "little ones" or the children of the tribe.  In the telling of tales, many things can be taught or learned. This is one of the ways that many tribes kept their cultures alive; it was not just a collection of stories, but of their beliefs, their ways, and their lives.   If it wasn't for storytellers who would tell the little ones? How would they learn of their past? What was it like to be a storyteller? You're about to find out.........

Listen to some Native American stories here

Task

For this assignment you will become a tribal storyteller.  You will research the tribe, then weave the tales of their lives into a beautiful story.  You will be asked to research one of the tribes below.  Remember to put yourself in the shoes, or moccasin of tribe members as you tell their tale.

Osage Indians
Plains Indians
Sioux Indians
Iroquois Indians
Cherokee Indians
Mound Builders Indians
Woodland Indians

You've decided that your groups need to find out the same information about each tribe so each group takes a list.

1.) The clothes they wore.

2.) The homes they lived in.

3.) Transportation they used to travel.

4.) Foods they ate.

5.) The ways they hunted and why they hunted.

6.) Resources they used.

7.) Artifacts

Process

Your group and yourself will use the notes you take (use the sheet given to you by your teacher) to create a book about the six aspects of Native American life. This book should have information and pictures for each of the six aspects. This will be to share with the little ones of your school.  You can create this book however you want.  You may write the book however your group chooses, it may be a personal narrative as if you were an Indian, an informative book, or as a diary.  Be sure to include a page with the storytellers' names. Also, title it and make it neat.

 1.) clothes
 2.) homes
 3.) transportation
 4.) foods
 5.) hunting
  6) Resources - You should tell about the resources Native Americans used.  This includes uses of the buffalo, wild plants, trees, etc.

You will produce an artifact f  This might be a piece of cave writing, tools, totem pole, clothing, pottery, or anything that relates to your tribe.
