Elementary Report Card Information

In an effort to provide parents with more information and documentation about their student's learning progress and achievement, the format of the elementary report card has been changed. Our teachers are working very hard to provide your child the best possible education and appreciate your support.

The following information is provided to help parents become familiar with grading procedures, terms and procedures.

____________________________

Grading Scale

The grade scale used is published each year in the Student Handbook. The elementary building uses the District grading scale as voted on by the School Board. In some special courses such as Computer Lab and Library students will not receive letter grades.

Activity Weightings

In most Elementary courses graded activities will be weighed (or valued) differently. It is important that grades truly reflect the student's individual knowledge base as well as progress on the content learned. Grades will better reflect an overall picture of student learning by weighting activities.

In most classes students will receive grades on the following activities: Benchmarks, Homework, Unit Tests, Participation, Daily Work, Quizzes.

Assessments

How do we know what the students know?

Assessments are weighted more heavily because they provide the most accurate view of student learning for report card purposes. Students will participate in a variety of assessments to meet the needs of all learners.

Quizzes

Quizzes are mini skill assessments that provide information about student learning on a specific objective. Educators may use quizzes to correct instruction, provide differentiated instruction and remediation.

Unit Tests

Unit tests are given after units of instruction to measure student mastery of content. Unit tests are very important toward measuring student learning and identifying problems before moving on to the next learning unit. Unit tests may vary in format but are focused on Grade Level Expectations with MAP-type construction response questions.

Benchmarks

Our elementary benchmark tests measures the academic standards taught in math, communication arts, social studies and science. Most students will participate in at least one benchmark test per quarter. A benchmark test will reflect the students' learning for the quarter. Several Grade Level Expectations (GLE) standards may be addressed with each benchmark test.

Standards

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has set forth standards for each grade level content area. These standards must be taught and assessed. On the elementary report cards parents will be informed about their students' progress on these grade level standards. Students will be assessed throughout the quarter, including benchmark assessments, and receive the following outcomes:

Exceeds (85% and above)
Meets (84%-61%)
Below (60% and below)
